A device rated at 36,000 puffs will almost certainly not give you exactly 36,000 puffs. That is not false advertising and it is not a fault — it is what happens when a laboratory measurement meets a real person. Understanding the gap makes you a much better shopper, because it changes what the numbers are good for.
How puff ratings are measured
A puff rating comes from a machine test. A device is attached to a puffing apparatus that draws on it at a fixed interval, for a fixed duration, at a fixed strength, until the e-liquid is exhausted. The number of machine draws is counted and that becomes the rating.
Everything about that is standardised: draw length, draw strength, interval between draws, and the point at which the device is considered finished.
Why your number differs
Draw length
This is the biggest factor. If you take longer draws than the test standard, each of your puffs consumes more e-liquid than a test puff, so you get fewer of them. Someone taking long, slow draws might get half the rated number; someone taking short, quick ones might exceed it.
Draw strength and interval
Harder draws aerosolise more liquid. Chain vaping — drawing repeatedly with little gap — also changes the figure, because the coil stays hot and each draw is more productive than a spaced-out one.
Where “finished” is defined
A machine stops at a defined endpoint. A person often keeps using a device past the point where flavour has dropped off, or conversely stops early because the taste has gone flat even though liquid remains. Both shift the number in opposite directions.
Battery behaviour
On a rechargeable device the battery is rarely the limit, but a device that is kept at a low charge and used hard may not deliver its full liquid capacity. All 58 models we stock charge over USB Type-C, so this is mostly avoidable — plug it in rather than letting it sit flat.
So is the rating useless?
No — it is just a comparative measure rather than an absolute one, and it is very good at what it is actually for.
Useful for: comparing two devices. A 60K device genuinely holds roughly twice what a 30K device holds, and that ratio holds up in real use regardless of how you draw. Every buying decision in this category should be made on these ratios.
Not useful for: predicting a date. Do not divide 36,000 by your estimated daily puffs and put the result in your calendar. Use it to choose between 36K and 60K, not to plan a month.
How to actually estimate how long a device will last you
The reliable method is empirical rather than arithmetic:
- Buy one device at the capacity you are considering. Use it normally.
- Note how long it lasts. Not how many puffs — how many days or weeks.
- Scale from there. If a 30K device lasts you six weeks, a 60K device will last roughly twelve. That ratio is dependable in a way the absolute number is not.
One measured data point about your own habits is worth more than any manufacturer figure.
Why this makes high capacity a safer buy
If ratings were precise, the only question would be how many puffs you need. Because they are estimates, buying more capacity than you think you need is a hedge against your own draw style being heavier than average.
And since prices across our range run only from about A$20 to A$41 per unit in a 10-pack, the hedge is cheap. The QQBANG 30K is A$26.19 and the QQBANG 500K is A$33.59 — if your real-world yield turns out to be half the rated figure, the larger device still comes out far ahead.
What to check on the box instead
Rather than treating the puff number as a promise, look at the things that are genuinely comparable between devices:
- E-liquid volume, where stated — more directly meaningful than the puff estimate.
- Battery capacity in mAh — tells you how long between charges, not how long the device lasts. The BANG Blaze 60K 1000mAh is a good example of a large battery in a mid-capacity device.
- Whether it recharges — everything in our range does, over USB-C.
Bottom line
Puff ratings are a ruler, not a calendar. Use them to rank devices against each other — that is what they are designed for and they do it well — and use your own experience of one device to predict how long the next will last.
If you want to compare capacities side by side, the 30K–100K, under 30K and over 100K categories are grouped by exactly that measure.

FAQ
How is a puff rating actually measured?
By a machine that draws for a fixed duration — commonly around three seconds — at a fixed interval, until the device stops producing vapour. Nobody vapes like that. Longer or harder draws consume more liquid per puff and mechanically reduce the total count.
What share of the stated rating do people actually get?
It varies with draw length and charging habits, but a working estimate is somewhere around 60-70% of the printed maximum. Use the printed figure to rank models against each other rather than as a forecast of what you will personally get.
Is a puff rating useful if it is inflated?
Yes, as a comparison. If two devices are measured on similar machine cycles, the ratio between them is meaningful even when both absolute numbers are optimistic. Cross-check with e-liquid capacity, which is not measured the same way.
Does a bigger device last proportionally longer?
Broadly yes, because it holds more liquid, but not in a straight line. Larger units often run lower coil resistance, which consumes liquid faster per puff. Compare millilitres of e-liquid alongside the puff figure for a fairer picture.
